My Ideal Working Day

Two weeks ago I posted about what it would take to quit my job. After crunching some numbers, I figured I could afford to quit my job if I could make $160/day online consistently. $160/day comes to $58,400 a year before taxes. Matt suggested I write a follow up post on what my day might look like if I didn’t have to go to work in an office and could stay at home and work online. So let’s take a look.

7:00 - Wake up

7:00 - 7:30 - Check previous days earnings. Make sure all sites are functioning. Check MSN/ESPN for important news that happened overnight. Eat power bar.

7:45 - 8:30 - Go to gym and work out.

8:45 - 9:00 - Shower and drink protein shake.

9:00 - 10:00 - Check emails and respond to time sensitive ones. Read blog posts from friends. Check forums I post on.

10:00 - 12:00 - Work on websites. Write and add content to all my sites.

12:00 - 1:00 - Lunch

1:00 - 2:00 - Play a game of DOTA on Warcraft 3: TFT or other video games.

2:00 - 3:00 - Promote websites. Link exchanges, directory submissions, SEO work.

3:00 - 3:15 - Break for snack

3:15 - 4:15 - Add more content to my sites.

4:15 - 5:00 - Wrap up. Add content. Check Emails. Plan for tomorrow.

5:00 - I’m done for the day.

Now that’s a rough life huh? If I can get paid $160+/day to do that, I’ll be loving life. Sure does beat the daily grind of commuting and sitting in a cubicle all day. And the best thing about working online is you can reinvest the money you earn back into your work (to ultimately increase your daily earnings). You can’t do that in a corporate job unless you get stock options.

It’s hard to know exactly how I’d spend my days without actually having that opportunity. Someday, hopefully I’ll be in that position.

Battle at Kruger

I’m very busy today and didn’t have time to write up a post. I also have a golf outing at work, so my hours at the PC are limited today.

But don’t worry. I’ve got an amazing video for you to watch. Just try to watch the whole thing without fast forwarding!

Introducing Mugdish

I am very proud to introduce to you my latest website, Mugdish.

So what is Mugdish? Mugdish is a new sports blog with outspoken banter written by yours truly. Sports is only of the only topics I can constantly write about and not get bored with it, so it was only natural to create another sports site!

Mugdish isn’t just a regurgitation of news posted on espn.com or sportsline.com. I’m adding my own wit and satire to it. The draw to the website will be the “Make the world a better place, punch this athlete in the face” posts. You can view an example of this in my Larry Johnson post. Once I get a lot of readers, I hope people will steal those “punch in the face” images and post them around the internet, all the while telling people where they found it.

Currently, I have posted about 10 or so articles. I wanted to get some content on it before I “launched” it. I’ve also added a forum and weekly polls to help keep readers on the site.

I’m not quite sure of the goals I have for Mugdish, but I’d ideally like this site to be making $300/mo by the end of the year with a readership in the mid 100s/day. I’d also love to have a custom wordpress design in place by the end of 2007.

I also would love to have guest posters established within a few months. Readers of sports blogs can get tired of hearnig the same opinion and homerism over and over again. It would be nice to have a fresh voice on there.

So how am I going to promote the site from the get go? Well, my budget is slim to none, so I think I’ll start by posting comments on as many sports blogs as I can find. I’ll also ask lesser known sports blogs for link exchanges. I want to load up my blogroll with 20-30 other sports blogs in a week. I plan to stumble every post I make too. I’m not sure if my IP is banned by digg, so if not, I’ll submit some of my better posts to Digg.

Pretty simple stuff. I was able to get my very first website (a sports blog) up to 200-300 uniques/day by writing content and doing link exchanges, so I don’t see a reason why it can’t work again 2 years later.

If you have any tips or suggestions on how to improve the site, please feel free to critique!

What is BUM Marketing?

In your endeavors, you may have come across the term ‘BUM Marketing.’ You won’t find it’s definition in the dictionary or in wikipedia. In simple terms, BUM marketing is a a way of using articles to boost your affiliate sales. Usually webmasters write articles for SEO purposes, such as traffic or linkbacks to your website. With BUM marketing, however, you write an article for the purpose of generating sales. Word is… it’s so easy a bum could do it.

Here’s a quick example of BUM marketing. Jason signs up for an affiliate program on a new shampoo website. He makes 50% commission on every sale. Instead of building a website to sell products (Jason thinks this is too much work), he simply writes 5 shampoo articles himself. Jason even pays content writers $5 to write 5 more shampoo articles. While writing the articles about shampoo (shampoo reviews), Jason subtly inserts his affiliate link into the meat of the content. When the articles are done, Jason submits them all to as many free article sites as he can find. Now Jason sits back and watches the money roll in.

Nice example huh? You’re thinking…if only it was that easy. Well…why do you think it’s called BUM marketing? It is that easy!

You will need to have patience though. Your articles won’t be read over night by millions. Free articles spread across the internet like a virus. I wrote a couple of articles on college scholarships and dorm life almost 3 years ago and people are still picking them up.

The goal is to keep pumping out articles with your affiliate links in them. You don’t have to worry about maintaining a website, driving traffic, getting backlinks or hosting issues.

Below are several free article websites you can submit your work too:

Ask David Batch #3

It’s Monday again, and that means another installment of Ask David. I Only got a handful of questions in the past week, so this won’t take too long for me to write.

Jason asks: What are a few tips to SEO a Wordpress blog?

One of the best plugins to help SEO a wordpress blog is Optimal Title. This plugin changes the structure of your page titles. “Having your page information appear before your blog name in the title is advantageous because it provides more meaningful search engine results and browser bookmark names.”

Another reccommendation I have is changing the Permalinks structure in your Options menu. Out of the box, your wordpress URLs will look like yourblog.com/?p=13 or something. For SEO, it’s better to have your keywords in the URL. I use this custom structure: /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/ .  This puts the year/month/post-title in the URL.

Jeff from Fan Site Portal asks: What’s your favorite TV show?

It’s tough to pick just one favorite show. I’m a big fan of LOST. NO matter how crazy the show gets, I’m still addicted. I am also a fan of Family Guy, Seinfeld, Still Standing, and Man vs. Wild.

Matt from Fleeing The Social Scene asks: Do you seem to notice a trend of bloggers using turning points in their lives as fuel for posts? And if so, what do you think of it, and if its a good thing how do you suspect a person could maximize their return (either revenue or traffic) by using the tactic?

I haven’t noticed bloggers using turning points in their lives as fuel for posts so much that it is becoming a trend. A lot of bloggers use their blogs for personal use as well as business purposes, so it’s natural for them/us to talk about events happening in their lives.

I have posted about turning points in my blog (my engagement for example). I think it’s a good thing to post about these events if you have them. You could maximize these efforts by selling products related to your turning point event. I could have posted a link to a wedding invitations offer in one of my posts, and maybe I would have got 1 or 2 leads. You can also bring in traffic to your site that you would not normally target.

Other turning points in someone’s life could be having a child, graduating colleged, turning 40…If you post about these things, your blog will get indexed under those keywords and bring in a whole new wave of traffic you otherwise never would have had.

3 Day Weekend

I’m out today (thank you timestamp) and the rest of the weekend. My parents rented a beach house at Amelia Island, FL for a couple days. It’s about 45 minutes North of where I live in Jacksonville, so it’s not to bad of a drive. This part of Florida is absolutely gorgeous. It has an old plantation feel to it surrounded by lush wildlife and untapped beaches.

So I’m going up there with Katie (my fiance), my parents, my older sister and her husband, and my younger sister and her boyfriend. It will be a house-full, but it will be a ton of fun. Today we’re going out on a boat (wakeboarding and fishing) throughout the Intracoastal Waterway. Saturday will likely be a chill day on the beach. Followed by another chill day on Sunday.

Since I’m on vacation, I wanted to take a day off from blogging as well. Sorry to disappoint you. I haven’t been on a real vacation in awhile. Even though I’m only going to be there for 3 nights and 3 days… I’m still looking forward to an awesome, relaxing weekend. We’ll be bringing a laptop with us, but no word on if there will be internet. I’m not going to be checking in on my blog or my sites until Sunday night. When I go on vacation, I like to go on vacation from my online work as well.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Might have some pictures for you on Monday too!
