The Summer Months

I’ve heard before that the summer months can hurt webmasters. People are more likely to be outside enjoying themselves than inside on a computer clicking our ads. We are now in the middle of May and approaching summer rapidly … at least in Florida we are. Perfect beach weather is just around the corner.

I’ve started to see a slow dip in my earnings over the last week or two. I wonder if the dip can be attributed to the weather. Also kids are out of school now, college is out, families are on vacations…there are a lot of reasons people will not be on their computers as much.

The only group we can count on are office rats who sit in their cubicles all day. We know day in and day out that they will be there for us to target.

This will be my first real summer of earnings. Last summer I was pulling in like $2-3/day. Things are much better now, but also I am more dependent on my online income. If my earnings take a big cut because of the Summer, then I might be eating ramen noodles every night. Just kidding :-)

Anyways, just wanted to give everyone a heads up. It’s looking good down here (despite the wild fires) and people might be ditching their PCs soon!

The Players

Just wanted to rub it in everyone’s face. I’m heading out to The Players (formerly known as TPC) around 11:00 today. See, working for the man isn’t all bad.

What a better way to spend an afternoon then watching professional golf? Going to golf tournaments is awesome, even if your not a fan. You get to stand 2 feet away from the pros. You can following guys like Tiger, Phil, Vijay and Ernie. It’s just a different environment then going to a football game. You are right there in the middle of the action.

If you’re confused about what I’m talking about, check out their official tournament page here : Link

Hope everyone has fun today and an awesome weekend!

TTZ Media

Yesterday I was invited the join TTZ Media (The Tech Zone Media) run by John Chow. It is an advertising network similar to Adsense, Yahoo Publisher Network, and Shopping.com. I will be test running these ads on my blog and several of my other sites to test their performance.

The ads look very similar to the shopping.com ones. It shows an electronic device (maybe a digital camera) and lists four or five prices and stores that you can buy the product from. Publishers get paid on a per click basis. I have no idea what the payouts will be like, but I don’t expect them to match what Yahoo pays out.

If I owned a tech site, these would be perfect. I’m not quite sure how they will pan out on my sites, but I’m giving it a shot. Check back later today for a glimpse.

Feedburner Count Messed Up?

I heard of a couple people reporting unusually low Feedburner counts. Mine has been averaging 75-77 over the last week or two, and as of right now is displaying 39. That is quite a drop off. Hopefully it is only temporary.

I really don’t care what the feed number count is because I don’t rely on it for advertising. But a lot of high traffic blogs with subscribers in the thousands can earn more money in advertisements if they have a high feed count.

I’m sure something happened with their reporting. I doubt that I had 40 people just drop my blog overnight. It doesn’t make sense.

What You Know About Math?

I thought this was funny. A parody of TI’s ‘What You Know About That’. Kind of goes with the Weird Al ‘White and Nerdy’ video I posted a couple months back.

Blogroll Anchors

First off, I want to say how much I hate the internet. I had a huge post typed up, and as soon as I push send the internet goes down and I lost everything. I really don’t feel like typing it all out again, so I’m going to give you the Cliff’s version.

I was talking on MSN to the man formerly known as King Nomar. From this point on he’ll be known as Online Marketing, at least according to my blogroll he is. Nomar asked if he could change the anchor text on his link from my blogroll. He said no one searches ‘King Nomar’. Nomar brings up a good point that I wanted to touch on briefly.

Why do webmasters/entrepreneurs/whatever you want to call us, usually use our names as anchor texts on other blogrolls? I mean how many people search for ‘Bob Buskirk’ in Google? No offense Bob :-), but I doubt it’s many. And it’s not just Bob, it’s a lot of us. Just look on my blogroll, half are names. And I’m guilty of this too.

If our goal is to bring in more traffic and make more money, then why do we use our names as anchor texts? Why not use something people search for?

Maybe there’s something valuable by getting your name out there? Better connections in the industry? Better reputations among colleagues?

So why did you pick your anchor text? I’d like to hear a few responses in the comments. And if you want me to change your text no my blogroll, just let me know.
