So How is Mass Effect Doing?

I have a known bad habit of starting projects and not finishing them… or at least not taking them to the next level. I’m not the only web entrepreneur (can we even call ourselves entrepreneur’s if we don’t finish a project?) who has this horrible habit.
A few weeks ago I posted about my latest project on the upcoming XBOX 360 game, Mass Effect. For those of who you haven’t read that post, I’ll give you the two line Cliffs. I started a forum powered by vbulletin. The site aims to be a total resource for the game Mass Effect, a futuristic RPG that is supposed to revolutionize the way RPGs are played.
So what steps have I done to get this site going? Well for starters, I had to get posts on there. The first step I took was to make a deal with a paid posting company. I traded some sponsored blog post links for a paid posting package from my buddy Andreas Bard. His people do an excellent job, so I highly recommend contacting him if your forum needs a boost. After that, I created a Namepros Incentive thread. I offered $10NP to anyone who registered an posted once on my forum. I think around 10 people signed up for that offer.
So far the site has around 200 posts. It’s not a lot by any means. Getting content for a game that doesn’t come out for months is hard. But now that I have some posts to work with, it will be much easier getting news for the homepage. I also added 8 screenshots to the screenshot page and there are 5 videos of the game posted.
Currently, I need to work on finding some reviews for the game and getting some links. I’ll start my link building process by approaching owners of xbox 360 game fan sites. If I can’t get a lot of links that way, I’ll make a post on digitalpoint asking for link exchanges.
I have still yet to add all the mods, such as the arcade, vbplaza, and visitors in the last 24 hours. It’s a growing process and I do find it hard to work on this project for some reason. I think if the game were out and I was playing it, then creating content would be easier.
Also my site is ranked #2 for ‘mass effect forum’. It’s nowhere to be found for the search ‘mass effect’, but that’ll change once I get some links.
If you have any ideas on how to get this site going, don’t hesitate to let me know.

Once the game comes out, you’ll be thanking yourself that you did all this legwork early on. I think it will pay off, even if the game doesn’t become a huge hit, I think it could still generate a good income once it’s out. Just hang onto it and don’t sell out. You can also use it down the road to leverage traffic to other video game sites. Hmmm, those last couple of sentences sounded less than optimistic. I didn’t mean to sound that way though. I just always think of contigencies ahead of time, so if the worst happens, I’ve already staked out new opportunities based on the work I’ve already done.
How did you find out about the game? Is there somewhere online that lists upcoming games? That would be neat, so us web developers could go there and get ideas for future projects.
Marc - always optimistic
Thanks for the input.
Bill - check out http://www.ign.com. On the left side pick xbox, ps3, pc, or whatever and then click release dates. Find some games coming out in quarter 3 or 4 or even next year and do some research.
Nice
I know what you mean about not finishing projects.
For me it always seems like the last 10% is the most difficult to complete… the rest is done rather quickly. Then I end up deciding I don’t like the design so waste loads of time on that.
Good luck with the site, as Marc says, you will be glad you put the effort in so early.
