Early YPN Indications

Early Yahoo Publisher Network indictations are that it will be a huge success on Myspace Layout Pimper. I know that I haven’t even had YPN on my site for 2 full days yet, but I have seen some amazing results. Who would have thought that YPN would be so successful on a Myspace resource site when the ads aren’t targeted at all!

On January 29th, mid to late afternoon, I placed YPN on my site instead of Adsense. I didn’t add any units, I put them in the same exact spot. On that first day I earned $6.65 in about a half days work. I was impressed, but didn’t want to get too excited just yet. Maybe the newness factor attracted people to click on it??

So yesterday, the 30th, was my first full day of having YPN on my site. With 22,000 ad unit impressions, I earned a whopping $17.89! That is over 3x what I was earning on the same exact site with Adsense. It makes me wish I put YPN on there a long time ago.

Many commentors said I would earn more, and so far it seems like they were right! I’ll be interested to see if I can stay around that $17/day mark, or if it will fluctuate a lot. If it stays that high, then I will nearly double my monthly revenue just by switching the Yahoo.

I will certainly keep you posted on how this develops over the rest of today and tomorrow. If all looks good, I might switch my entire network (but keep geo-targeting).

Just Sold a PR5 Myspace Site

Well, I did it again. I just was itchy to make some fast cash and found my most vulnerable site and had to put it out there. Myspace Login was just sitting there all innocent looking. He didn’t want to get put up for sale. But after matching him up with everything else I had, it just made the most sense (afterall, I have like 4 sites running this same script).

So I sold one of my precent PR5 upgraded Myspace resource sites on Digitalpoint for a cool $200. I really thought I cuold get more since you can sell PR5 links for like $10/mo, but people just weren’t buying it. I think a lot of bidders are fed up of seeing the same stupid myspace resource sites up for sale. The same scripts with the same layouts over and over again.

After some negotiating, I lowered my initial BIN $350 down to $200 with only a few hours left in the auction. I think they buyer got a great deal. The sitegets around 30-70 uniques/day and has hardly any outbound links. It has made an average of like $2-3/month from adsense. It’s a great starter site. If the buyer can drive traffic to it, there’s no doubt he’ll make his money back in like 2 months time.

So why did I sell? Why was I ‘itching’ for cash? Well, I’ll be honest with you.. I’ve fallen in love with Vbulletin. I’ve always been a fan of forums, and truly believe that great success can be achieved if you can build a quality forum that can stand the test of time. Easier said than done right?

So, I sold my site for $200 so I could invest in a vbulletin license and a $30 vb skin. I found a great skin that I will be able to customize to fit my sites needs. If the site takes off, I can always get a custom skin done later. I have a solid idea for a forum, that only has one major competitor. I feel I can step in there and capitalize on the situation. If the forum becomes successful, I feel it can last for a good 6 years before it becomes obsolete.

More info on this project to come in the future. I already have the domain purchased, just need to get everything set up. Hopefully by Friday!

Fun in Florida

The following is a paid post by Pay Per Post. I tried doing this once before, buy my post wasn’t accepted because I didn’t state that it was paid advertising.

Since I love in Florida, I am very aware about what is going on in Florida travel. Tourism is the biggest industry in Florida bar none. If you ask a European if they know where Jacksonville, Tampa, Palm Beach or anything else in Florida, they will immediately ask “How far is it from Orlando?” or “Where is it in relation to Orlando?”

Florida has a ton of attractions, such as Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, KEnnedy Space Center, Cypress Gardens, Sea World, Marine Land, and countless others.

Orlando properties offers Europeans a listing of spectacular properties for sale. No matter where you are in Florida you are always nearby a major attraction or a spectacular beach. It’s the best state in America to live in!

My Microphone Won’t Work

I mentioned in my goals article that I wanted to start a sports podcast sometime in 2007. So I took the first step in this goal, by purchasing a headset and microphone. I found an awesome deal on ebay and picked up an Altec Lansing AHS-5021 headset.

I got home yesterday and noticed the package sitting at my front door. I was excited to hook it up and test it out. However, I hit a little bump in the road. Actually a HUGE bump in the road. The mic won’t work! And I think this is a problem with my computer, not the headphone because when I googled the error, other people had the same problem.

So I am pleaing for someone, one of you tech guys, to help me out. I hope that someone here knows what this problem is and knows how to fix it.

Initially, I plugged the pink mic cord into the pink mic hole in the back of my computer, and the light green cord into the light green hole into the back of my computer. The headphones worked, and I could hear sound, but when I opened Microsoft sound recorder, the mic did not pick anything up. So I tried the front pink mic hole on my computer, and it didn’t work either.

I went into the Sound section of the control panel and did a voice hardware test, to find this error:

Error Message:
Sound Hardware Test: An error occurred during direct play voice setup. The error code is 0×80004005.

I googled the error and followed all the steps from Smart Computing. I did all the edits and cleaned out the registry like it suggested. I was able to run the hardware test this time without the error, but when I got to the mic section and it asks you to read a paragraph into the mic, it still didn’t work. I read the paragraph and the mic didn’t pick anything up. I switched all the cords around and plugged them into every hole I could find. Still no luck.

I’m at a dead end. If anyone out there has experienced this same problem with getting a mic to work on windows XP, please let me know! This was a brand new device so I doubt the mic is broken. But it could be the case.

Post a comment or email me or msn message me if you have an answer! Thanks!

Switching Adsense to Yahoo Publisher Network

I’m still unhappy with the performance of my main Myspace resource site, Layout Pimps. With an average around 1,600 uniques/day, you’d think I could make a little more than $5.00/day from it.

So I’m making the move for a few days to Yahoo Publisher Network. I’m only moving this one site just as a test to see how well it performs. I’ve done this in the past, and didn’t see good results. Yahoo actually performed worse. My friend runs a myspace site on YPN and averages over $10 per 1,000 uniques. If those same proportions held true for my site, I would be earning around $16.00/day, which is a HUGE increase over where I’m at now.

I’m anxious to see how well Yahoo will perform, but I am not holding my breathe. I’ve never had good luck with it like so many people have. If I do see an increase, I may end up switching all my sites over to Yahoo. Their ad targeting sucks, but from what everyone says is that they pay out way better than Google.

Plus I have $45 sitting in my Yahoo account right now, so worse come to worse, I’ll let Layout Pimps sit in YPN until I reach $100 that way I get a payout, then move it back to Google so I can get a payout from them as well.

I will keep everyone posted on the performance of YPN on my site. The goal is to make more than $5.12/day. Since I made the switch just 5 minutes ago, I will not start keeping track until tomorrow so I have a full day to work with.

Google Adsense Color Experiment

A week ago I posted an article about changing the color of the Google ads on Layout Pimps. Well I am happy to report that my earnings did in fact increase as a result of the color change. I originally had a light blue color for my links, and switched it to red so it would Pop more.

Over the week span from January 15-21st, Layout Pimps averaged $3.67/day from adsense. During that same week, my site averaged 1,665 unique visitors a day. During the week of January 22-28, Layout Pimps averaged $5.12/day from adsense on only 1,462 uniques visitors/day. So, I saw a decrease in traffic and an increase in revenue all because I changed the colors of my ads.

But you want to know where this gets interesting? After I changed the color of my ads, I saw a decrease in the CTR by a couple hundreths of a percentage point. The average number of clicks from the 15-21st to the 22-28th also dropped by 10 clicks/day.

What does all this mean? I have no idea!! I wonder what caused the increase in revenue when i averaged less clicks/day? I’m pretty confused about all this…

Read my next post to find out what I’m doing about it.
