Profiting From Myspace

In today’s post I am going to give my opinion and views on profiting from the world’s largest social network, MySpace. Many internet entrepreneurs have MySpace resource sites. These are simply cookie cutter websites that provide MySpace users with layouts, graphics, music/video codes, and just about everything else a member can use to customize their profile. I have gotten into the MySpace scene a little late… actually like 2 years late. I’ll first list my 2 or 3 MySpace websites and then go into my opinion on all of the resource sites.

  • MySpace Link Directory
  • Layout Pimps
  • Free MySpace Backgrounds
  • My opinions

MySpace Link Directory

I have owned several directories in the past. From my experiences, directories don’t make as much money from Adsense as they do from selling featured links. From my previous directories, I’ve probably only made $15-$20 from featured link sales. I never kept a directory long enough to earn PageRank, so I never experienced the true earning potential. Directories are also attractive sales, making them valuable in my eyes. MyLink-Space.com is my very first MySpace related site. It is simply a directory for all other MySpace sites, anything from layout generators to profiles.
I have so far sold only 1 featured link spot for $1/month (that’s why this site isn’t in my “big” three yet). I think this site has potential to be an excellent MySpace directory. While I’m not too fond of the name, I had to find something that did not have myspace in the domain. Rumors are going around saying MySpace is cracking down on people using their name in a domain for a profit. This site is about a week old.

Layout Pimps

For some reason, someone declared the word “pimp” to be the official word for customizing your MySpace profile. Everyone has pimp, pimpin, pimpmy, or pimpanything in their domain. Google search pimp and I wouldn’t be surprised if everything on there was MySpace related.

Layoutpimps.net is a cookie cutter resource site. It looks like just about every other MySpace resource website out there. All I did is add my own links and change the header. From what I’ve heard these sites are very profitable if you can drive traffic to them. Notice the images by the top center Google ad. Traffic comes to these sites like a virus. Most of the graphics and what not have links back to the homepage, so if someone displays something from layoutpimps.net it will also display my URL on their profile page. Layoutpimps is also a week old.

Free MySpace Backgrounds

I got domain registering happy when Registerfly was running their $2.75 .NET domains. So I registered freespacebackgrounds.net. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with this name, but I’m sure it will be MySpace related. “Free space backgrounds” is a high search term for some reason, so this domain could help bring me to that next level ($10/day).

My Opinions on MySpace

There’s probably not a day that goes by where I don’t hear the name MySpace. Being involved in an internet business it is almost vital to keep up with the times. MySpace is a hot bed for teenagers and young adults. It has become overly saturated with marketing types and spammers, but somehow they are still effective. People spam out mass bulletins with links to their websites to thousand and thousands of friends. Spam has a negative connotation, but it can still be a very effective form of marketing. I feel that if I want either of my MySpace related websites to take off, I will have to revert to spamming people’s profiles.

I personally don’t have a problem with it or people who make a living from it. No one is making the person click on the bulletin or click on the link inside of it. It is the users choice to visit the website. I don’t have any MySpace accounts with more than 400 friends. I have 2 accounts that I use for business only, myspace.com/fightsonglyrics and myspace.com/historum. I use them to keep in contact with people who are interested in my sites. I send out about 1 bulletin a week. I do not have a personal account on MySpace, and I never will.

Well that about sums up everything I have to say about MySpace and my own resource websites. I’m getting in the game late, but I still think there is money to be made. I am not counting on this ever bringing in $100/day, but with these two sites combined with all my others, I hope it can bring me to the $10/day in a few months.

Summary of my “Big Three”

I wanted to take some time to introduce you to my top three producing web sites. These are not high revenue producing websites by any means. I know people who make anywhere from $10/day on a single site to well over $100/day. If you put hard work, and have patience, you can build a profitable web site. Time is one thing not on my side. I am not a patient person, as you can see by looking at my income statement. I buy and sell websites and domains very fast.

  • Fight Song Lyrics
  • Sonic Wild Fire
  • Historum

Fight Song Lyrics
FightSongLyrics.com is by far my oldest and most profitable website to date. Fight Song Lyrics is about 6 months old and has made me $80 to date from Adsense alone. I have also made a few bucks selling links on the homepage. I was lucky enough to “cash in” on March Madess making most of my money during the month of March during basketball season.

Fight Song lyrics is a large database of college football fight songs. You know… the University of Florida’s Orange and Blue or the Seminole’s War Chant. It’s a fun site that gets a lot of targeted viewers. There are only a few weeks left until football season, so you can imagine I’m excited about the potential earnings generated from students looking for their school’s song.

Sonic Wild Fire
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time. He’s graced television screens on cartoon shows and video games. Nintendo will be launching their new console, Wii, in November. When I heard of this, I immediately searched for new games coming out on the Nintendo system. Sonic Wild Fire was one of them. I quickly registered the domain and built a fan site. It includes reviews, screenshots, trailers, forums, and more.

SonicWildFire.com gets a lot of traffic (for me anyways). It brings in about 150 unique visitors a day. Sonic Wild Fire is about 2 months old and has netted me about $50 profit from Adsense and link sales. It has potential to be a very profitable site once the game is released. My site was fortunate enough to get listed on Wikipedia. Very cool! It brings me quite a bit of traffic everyday. See it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Wild_Fire

Historum
History was always one of my favorite subjects growing up in school. I loved learning about American History in particular. I wanted to take that passion for history and build it into a website. There are a lot of history forums out there, so I’ve got my work cut out for me. We have many discussions about ancient Egypt, the American Civil War, Rome, WWII, and just about any other significant event in history.

Historum.com is about 6 weeks old and has produced a profit of $25, all from Adsense. We have 188 members and are constantly growing. The name Historum was created by a play on words. All I did was combine History and Forum to make one word. It’s not a real word to my knowledge. I have had a couple compliments about the name because it is easy to remember and somewhat brandable.

So there you have it, a quick summary on my “big” three sites. They might not be big compared to other web sites out there, but they are big to me. They all have potential, they just need time to grow. I put a lot of work into them to ensure the visitors have a unique experience and leave with a reason to come back. If you have any questions regarding my websites, feel free to contact me.

A Little About Me

Welcome to Lithman.net, and thank you for taking the time to read my first blog entry. My name is David Lithman, and this blog will act as an online journal, motivator and a way for me to keep track of my business venture. So let’s start this off with some basic background information for those of you who are interested.

I’m 23 years old and live in Jacksonville, Florida. I pretty much grew up here for most of the life I can remember. I graduated high school in 2001 and went off to pursue a bachelors degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville. I am now a proud Gator Alum, class of 2005. I graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Sports Management. Some of you may wonder why someone with a sports management background is trying to make a living online. Well, I do currently work full time in the golf industry I just buy and sell websites as a hobby hoping one day I will make a high enough daily avg. that I can quit my day job. Quite a dream huh? Anyways, back to the Bio.

So I run a couple of websites in my spare time. My girlfriend hates it because this business requires a lot of time. It gets very difficult juggling full time work, a part time business, a girlfriend, and a social life. But somehow I manage. As you can see on the right sidebar I have several sites.

The “Big” Three: Not really so big in terms of websites, but they are a start for me and the best performing sites I own. I classify them in the “big” section because they have constant traffic and have the ability to give me constant revenue, even if it is just a few bucks a day. The other sites on the rise and newly developed sites that may have minimal traffic and revenue, but have potential to grow into a “big” site.

As the days go on, I will try to update this site at least several times a week. I might post about things happening at my real job, or the progress of my internet ventures. I might talk about new domains or sites I buy, or if I make any sales. I will keep you updated on the revenue generating performance of my sites because that is what most people are interested in.

Enjoy!
